Chicago Did some major spring cleaning on the coaching tree this year. They brought in Tampa Bay Defensive Coordinator Irwin Landis as head coach. He has had the players focused on his playbook all off-season. He plans to Run a West Coast offense and 3-4 Pass Focused defense.

Now onto the draft picks,

With the first round pick Chicago selects 3 players! Rather than take a early mid draft pick they traded for three players from last years division champs Carolina.

Rd 1 pick 12 became
QB Anthony Reed: The 5th year QB had a decent showing at training camp last year, and signs point to The Fighting Illini alumn being the coaches clear favorite for the starting role.

Thomas Xiong: The second year LB will be moving to MLB to play alongside future star James Martinez. The multi-talented linebacker should fit right in with the new coaches strategy.

and a third round draft pick in 2020.

Other notable draft picks
Round 4 pick 9:Tyler McElroy flashed astounding speed and strength at the combine, but had limited play time in college. Chicago couldn't be happier however as once the coaches got their hands on him he showed a stunning knowledge of the game and earned himself a starting role at LDE. He should fit right in alongside last years standout RDE Robert Cupps, himself a bit of a surprise, who led the team in sacks.

Round 7 pick 11: William Leonard, after trading away the teams star LT for a future first round pick, Chicago had a big hole to fill. Nobody expects to find starting talent in the 7th round, but William Leonards pass blocking ability is excellent, he should fit in as the number 2 at several positions on the line and help keep new QB Anthony Reed protected.

Bust of the draft
Round 2 Pick 11: Ron Ley was supposed to be a mismatch made in heaven, 6'3 inches tall, excellent route running skills, great speed and the ability to go up for the ball. But once he got to camp it quickly became clear he had no ability to come down with the ball. In fact he could barely hold onto anything, phones, mugs, laptops, everything escaped his grasp and wound up smashed on the floor like the teams dreams for his career. He has the preseason to show some amount of worth, or he will be packing his bags and going home as nothing more than a cautionary tale.

After the first preseason game Chicago is looking good, Let's check in with some of the highlights, first off the new guys.

QB Anthony Reed looked like a seasoned pro in his first preseason start for Chicago. He stayed calm in the pocket under pressure, showed accuracy, and his timing allowed Scat Back Cruz, and WR #1 Ard the space to wheel around defenders and blow the top off for some big plays. A well deserved 150 QB rating.

check out the big plays here.

Reed to Ard on a simple curl route. Huge credit to Nickolas Williams for hustling all the way across the field for that magnificent last minute block

The other part of that trade had a great day too. Thomas Xiong (MLB) held strong over the center and even came down with an interception. Only John Ladner(Safety Round 2) was able to keep up with him on tackles.

Ron Ley had a quiet game, but showed a willingness to do anything to stay on the team with a huge hit on special teams

RDE Tyler McElroy(Round 4), LT William Leanoard(Round 7) and recent acquisition John Palmer had quiet but solid games.

But Game ball has to go to Bruce Holt. The round three draft pick had been brought in to play CB and clearly had no talent for the position, he was almost cut before the game but the Defensive Line Coach saw the kid putting in an insane workout in the gym and asked for one game to try him out. that game resulted in this.

pass knocked down

Tackle For Loss

sack #2

sack #3

While this was all against second teamers, there is definitely room on the team for someone who can sack the QB before the Lineman even sets up a block
